Hunting

Norway is a country rich in hunting opportunities. There are large numbers of moose, wild reindeer, deer, hare, grouse and other large woodland fowl in the forests and mountains. State laws, however, regulate where you can hunt, what you can hunt, when you can hunt, and what weapons you can hunt with.

In addition, there are often separate rules for hunting on private land and Crown lands.

Persons resident abroad do not have to take a hunting proficiency test providing they satisfy the criteria for permission to undertake similar hunting in their home countries.

The Directorate for Nature Management can provide further information about hunting regulations in Norway. The Norwegian Directorate of Customs and Excise has information about rules concerning the import of weapons for hunting purposes, and the Norwegian Animal Health Authority can help with information about the importation of hunting dogs into Norway.

Fishing

For the fish lover there is cod, coalfish and mackerel to be caught all along the coast, and salmon, sea trout and red char swim in many rivers. Freshwater lakes and ponds are abundant with pike, perch, eel, trout and char.
Hunting requires leasing a parcel of hunting ground or a place on in authorised hunting co-op. Fishing requirements are easier - you just pay the set fees, which may be both state and local. There are fewer restrictions on fishing in the sea and for children under 16. Fishing with live bait is forbidden in Norway. While hunting is mainly for adults, fishing knows no age limit. The

Ice fishing
Once the ice has set, Norwegian ice fishing enthusiasts hit the ice. If you are patient and dressed warmly, a day of ice fishing can be an experience in a class of its own. Nature, tranquillity and the excitement of not knowing what you will catch are important elements. Ice fishing regulations are the same as for fresh water fishing. The Directorate for Nature Management has further information.
