Oslo - Bodø - Tromsø - Oslo
If you can get to Bodø early on Friday, we recommend the Norwegian Aviation Museum, a stroll in the centre and lunch in one of the town’s cafés. At 3pm Hurtigruten head out to sea, our bows pointed towards the Lofoten archipelago. In summer evenings, conditions permitting, the ship inches her way into the astonishing Trollfjord. In the morning you wake up in Harstad. Arrival in Tromsø is at 2.30pm, and you check into Rica Ishavshotel. After that it’s merely a matter of choosing among the many things that the “Paris of the North” has to offer, such as the Arctic Cathedral, the cable-car, the Polar Museum and Polaria, the Arctic Experience.

BergenBergen – Trondheim
If you get to Bergen early in the day you can manage some of what this exciting cultural city has to offer before the Coastal Steamer leaves at 8pm or 10.30pm (depending on season).

You get two nights on board, and a long day with many impressions. The coastal channel runs through one of Norway’s countless archipelagos, sheltering both the ship Trondheimherself and the energetic population from the wrath of the North Atlantic. You call in at Ålesund, the capital of the Sunnmøre region, then comes the jazz city of Molde, and towards the end of the day you can admire the Atlantic Road jumping between islands and skerries, feel the sea-spray and listen to the cry of the gulls. In the summer, the ship makes a side-trip into the majestic Geirangerfjord. Arrival Trondheim is Sunday morning, so that you can enjoy the whole day in Norway’s first capital before the time comes to go to Værnes airport to catch the plane home.

Oslo - Ålesund – Bodø - Oslo
The Art Nouveau city in the west is the starting-point for this trip, Ålesundand the sea-eagle town in the north is its destination. We recommend ascending Mount Aksla in Ålesund for a fabulous view of the city and the Sunnmøre Alps before joining the

Coastal Steamer on departure at 9.30am or 3pm*. There is a lot of scenery to be enjoyed on the voyage north, some highlights being the narrow Stokksund, the Arctic Circle and the Svartisen icecap. But before that, you can spend some hours in Trondheim, the first capital of the kingdom. When we arrive in Bodø at 12.30pm we recommend a stroll around the town; the airport is very close, and so there is ample opportunity to explore on foot.

Oslo - Trondheim – Tromsø - Oslo
TromsøWith a morning flight to Værnes you can catch the Coastal Steamer’s 12 noon departure from Trondheim. The longest stretch without a port of call is between Trondheim and Rørvik, so you can instead enjoy the scenery from the panorama deck or the sunbeds on Five Deck. Early risers on Saturday can celebrate crossing the Arctic Circle and enjoy the approach to Ørnes, the most beautiful of the whole route. From here there is an optional excursion, visiting a tongue of the Svartisen glacier by bus and boat and rejoining the Coastal Steamer again at Bodø. If you stay on the ship, you can stroll in the town while waiting for the excursion to catch up, before crossing to the Lofoten islands. Here too, the panorama deck is the best place to be.

Season and weather permitting, we enter the beautiful Trollfjord, a sight you will never forget! The Vesterålen islands are passed during the night, we call at Harstad in the morning and arrive in Tromsø at 2.30pm Sunday morning. There is still time for some sightseeing before flying home again.

Oslo - Bergen – Ålesund – Bergen - Oslo
If you get to Bergen early in the day you can manage some of what this exciting cultural city has to offer before the Coastal Steamer leaves at 8pm or 10.30pm (depending on season). You spend one night on the northbound voyage to Ålesund and one night coming back. Ålesund is famous for its Art Nouveau architecture, with a profusion of towers, spires and beautiful decoration. We recommend ascending Mount Aksla in Ålesund for a fabulous view of the city and the Sunnmøre Alps. You should also try for a visit to the Atlantic Park, one of Europe’s biggest aquarium complexes, 3 km west of the city.

The Coastal Steamer’s departure from Bodø is 4am on Friday morning, and you can go on board as soon as the ship docks, at 1.30am. Do not miss the amazing stretch between Ørnes and the Arctic Circle, between a thousand islands Hurtigrutenand skerries and with the white cloak of the Svartisen icecap to the east. Hear the exciting history of the Torghatten rock formation near Brønnøysund, and meet the northbound Coastal Steamer in Trondheim. Oslo - Tromsø – Trondheim - Oslo
If you like, you can fly to Tromsø late Thursday evening, or else earlier so as to see as much as you can of the “Paris of the North’. The Coastal Steamer doesn’t leave until 1.30am, so you get to taste some of the city’s famous nightlife. On Friday you wake in Harstad, before threading the islands of first Vesterålen and then Lofoten. The dramatic scenery in this region calls for many hours on the sun or panorama decks, especially for amateur painters and photographers. The experience continues southwards along the coast of Helgeland, see detailed description under Trip 7. Arrival in Trondheim is Sunday 6.30am; you can thus spend Sunday in Trondheim before flying home from Værnes.

With a morning flight to Værnes you can catch the Coastal Steamer’s departure from Trondheim at 12 noon from most places in Norway. The Coastal Steamer calls at Bodø and Lofoten next day, and the day after that again you wake up in Harstad in time for the approach to Tromsø, where you have a four-hour break. We recommend a visit to the Polaria Arctic Experience, where you can enjoy the Caprino film “Svalbard – an Arctic Wilderness”. Outside the summer season they also show “Antarctica”, a beautiful and entertaining film about the continent, with penguins in the leading roles. Other suggestions are the Arctic Cathedral, the cable-car, and the Polar Museum. The Coastal Steamer continues northwards in the evening and next day we are in Honningsvåg. Excursions are arranged to the North Cape plateau, and the last morning on board we can visit the town of Vadsø before arriving in Kirkenes at 10am. Flight home.
